Medication Lockboxes

Should you consider getting a medication lockbox? According to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, roughly 52 million Americans over the age of 12 have misused prescription drugs at least once in their lifetime. The prevalence of prescription drug misuse is becoming the highest among young adults between the ages of 18 and 25, with over 11% reporting the misuse of prescription drugs in the past year (SAMHSA, 2021). Common examples of misuse of prescription drugs are using a medication that has not been prescribed to you, using a prescription in greater amounts than prescribed, using the medication in a non-medical way, and using medications for recreational purposes.

Safely disposing of expired or unwanted medications or keeping these medications locked away are two easy steps that we can take to prevent the impact of prescription drug misuse. Thanks to donations from key partners and funding from DBHDD, we are now able to provide medication lockboxes for those in need!

Medication lockboxes are key in helping to ensure the safety and security of medications, especially in homes with children, living with roommates, or individuals who may potentially misuse them. By locking up medications, we can reduce the risk of accidental ingestion, risk of theft, and help manage medication adherence. If you are interested in learning more or getting your hands on a medication lockbox, please reach out to Georgia Prevention Project at, info@georgiapreventionproject.org
