It’s been a busy semester and you are finally ready to relax and destress from all the classwork and exams your teachers have piled on you. Whether you are in middle, high school or college, everyone is anticipating the week-long break from all of your school worries. And you deserve it!
While it is important to let go of all your stresses, it’s also important to do so safely. Make sure the memories you make this spring break are ones you will look back on fondly and not with regret. Spring break is known to be a high-risk time for drug and alcohol use among high school and college students. We want you to be aware of the dangers that come along with using and mixing these substances.
Mixing prescription drugs and alcohol may result in nausea, drowsiness, fainting, increased blood pressure, memory loss, internal bleeding, cardiac arrest, overdose and even death. Sedatives + alcohol (both of which act as depressants) can slow your heart rate down to a dangerous and deadly levels. Stimulants + alcohol can increase your blood pressure and heart rate to dangerous levels, which could result in internal bleeding, organ damage and seizures. Opioids + alcohol (perhaps the most dangerous combination of all) can lead to more serious and lasting health consequences like brain damage and death by overdose.
The repercussions of mixing this deadly duo may come as a surprise to some of you, that’s why we want you to be prepared and aware of the risks. We encourage you to take action, protect, and look out for your peers this spring break. Spring break can be one of the best times of your life if you make a conscious effort to stay safe and play smart. Stay safe, stay aware and stay sober!Back to Blog
