How Naloxone Saves Lives

Naloxone, also known as NARCAN, is a life saving medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. This medication attaches to opioid receptors to reverse and block the effects of other opioids, quickly restoring a persons ability to breathe. While this drug has life saving capabilities, there are a few precautions to be aware of.

  1. Naloxone can not reverse the effects of a non opioid-related drug overdose.

  2. Naloxone only works for approximately 30-90 minutes. Once the medication wears off, it is possible for a person to experience the effects of another overdose. This is why you should always call 911 before administering Naloxone.

  3. Individuals with a dependence on opioids can experience withdrawal symptoms within minutes of receiving a dose of Naloxone. For the safety of the individual, it’s important that they are monitored for at least 2 hours after receiving a dose of Naloxone.
